THE WAIFS
SunDirtWater (Compass): B-
Aboriginal Australian triad the Waifs have in full embraced the mainstream sounds of their adopted United States in this disappointing follow-up to 2002’s entrancing “Up Totally Night.” Recorded in Nashville with Medicine City’s pM school term players, there’s a dearth of the creative quirks that made their previous work so enjoyable. Excessively many of these folky pop songs sound like second-rate Sheryl Corvus, lukewarm Norah Jones or mediocre res publica blues. Still, Jolly Merce Cunningham and sisters Donna Mrs. Simpson and Vikki Irritant always deliver at least one killer caterpillar track: this time it’s the farfisa-organ punctuated “Quell,” the unity to download.
